The contest took place before the Westchester Knicks’ own game, and several players, including newly acquired former BYU star Jimmer Fredette, could be seen watching the tail end of the high school game from the stage area.
Rye coach John Aguilar said teams always relish the chance to play at what could be described as the mecca of Westchester hoops.
“We just wanted to enjoy playing on the Knicks’ court before the Knicks’ game,” Aguilar said. “I think they really enjoyed themselves despite the outcome.”
Although Rye closely trailed for much of the game, Eastchester pulled ahead for good in the third quarter, led by point guard Benny DiMirco, who was named the game’s MVP.
Aguilar said the bright lights “absolutely” fazed his team.
“They’re 16- and 17-year-old boys,” he said. “But in the grand scheme of things, it’s one game out of 20, and the experience was well worth it.”
